High-performance DPI-Enabled Evaluation Platform based on the new Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2600 Series with 6WINDGate and ixEngine

Advantech's Deep Packet One Evaluation Platform, enhanced with the Intel® Data Plane Development Kit's (Intel® DPDK) optimized libraries, enable fast packet processing in the data plane using multi-core Intel® architecture technology. This latest platform based on the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2600 makes it possible to consolidate packet, application and control processing workloads on a single Intel® architecture platform. Advantech is partnering with leading packet processing software supplier 6WIND and network intelligence expert Qosmos to provide an optimized development platform enabling fast-track evaluation of the latest silicon technologies from Intel® providing 16 physical processor cores in a single platform with 80 Gbps of I/O. The platform can be expanded with a wide range of Network Module offerings allow many port configurations with or without network bypass, offload and acceleration.

The new platform features increased performance, faster and adaptable I/O along with greater memory capacity – all requirements at the core of applications using Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology such as policy enforcement, quality-of-service, mobile and video content optimization and subscriber analytics. An example of the IP Forwarding performance in combination with the Intel® DPDK and 6WINDGate shows an impressive IP forwarding performance which scales linearly with the number of fast path cores until it reaches the limit of the platform at 86Mpps. No more than six fast path cores are needed to achieve this, freeing up cores for other tasks.

By starting out with a turnkey appliance loaded with the Intel® DPDK, the 6WINDGate™ software and the Qosmos ixEngine™, developers will benefit from a comprehensive system for faster technology building block evaluation. Supported by Advantech's broad hardware offerings, OEMs can begin their development and evaluation work on this turnkey appliance and later move to other target platforms such as ATCA easily.

FWA-6510 Platform Overview

Based on Intel's latest Xeon processor platform, the FWA-6510 system has been designed for maximum performance, scalability and functionality in a 2U rackmount footprint. This multi-core processor-based, high-end network communication appliance is optimized for computing power and high speed / high density I/O with best in class energy efficiency.

Two E5 series Intel® Xeon® processors (Socket R) with up to 8 cores each provide the latest architectural enhancements as well as unprecedented I/O integration over previous generation CPUs:

Two Intel® QuickPath Interconnects running at up to 8GT/s each support reduced cross-socket memory to I/O latencies and increased throughput.
Each socket supports 4 DDR3 channels with speeds up to 1333MHz for up to 384GB of ECC memory when using the latest LR DIMM technology.
Advanced RAS modes such as mirroring and sparing increase platform reliability. Three I/O controllers per socket provide a total of 80 PCIe express lanes supporting latest gen. 3 technology of up to 8Gbps per lane.
With this improved IO connectivity, the FWA-6510 can support up to 8 Network Mezzanine Cards (NMCs) for modular, configurable networking I/O and acceleration.
PCIe gen 3 technology paves the way to support 40GE and quad 10GE modules in the near future.

The Intel® C600 Series PCH (chipset) not only integrates standard platform I/O and peripherals, but also supports an integrated SAS controller for the most reliable and highest speed mass storage. Up to four 2.5" SAS/SATA hard disks or solid state drives are supported at the front.

Advanced Lights Out Management based on Aspeed's latest iBMC AST2300 and AMI's MegaRAC IPMI suite improves system manageability, reliability providing platform thermal management, H/W monitoring and supervision. Remote firmware upgrade capability and hardware-based BIOS redundancy make the FWA-6510 an ideal platform for mission critical and highly available networking equipment.

Support for standard PCI-Express expansion slots with a riser card and TPM (Trusted Platform Management) for enhanced platform security round off the feature set of this platform.

The management panel at the front provides one RJ-45 serial port, two Gigabit Ethernet management ports, two USB ports and an LCD module, LED indicators for power/located/ alert for local system management, maintenance, and diagnostics. The system is FCC, UL, CE, CCC and RoHS compliant.

6WIND Overview

6WIND, the gold standard for software-defined networks, transforms mobile and cloud infrastructure by providing scalable, high-performance, low-latency networking software optimized for cost-effective hardware based on multicore processors, while enabling Network-as-a-Service capabilities that monetize network services such as bandwidth, QoS and security.

The 6WINDGate™ software includes a full set of control plane modules, a high-performance networking stack and a wide range of fast path protocols optimized for processors such as the Intel® Xeon® processor family.

As a drop-in replacement for the standard Linux networking stack, 6WINDGate maintains compatibility with Linux APIs so that existing applications can easily be reused in new systems. Full support is provided for virtualization with no impact to system performance.

The vast majority of packets are processed in a fast path environment, executing in a Linux userspace environment. By avoiding typical OS overheads associated with functions such as preemptions, threads, timers and locking, this architecture maximizes system-level performance for packet processing functions.

Typically, 6WINDGate delivers 10x the packet processing performance of a standard Linux networking stack, with performance increasing linearly based on the number of processor cores configured to run the fast path.

6WINDGate includes a comprehensive set of networking protocols for routing, switching, security, mobility and protocol termination, minimizing the need to integrate protocols from multiple software suppliers.

Available protocols include:
VLAN, Mobile IP, link aggregation, GRE, PPP, L2TP, GTP, MPLS, ROHC
IP forwarding, IP tunneling, routing and virtual routing
IPv4, IPv6, IP multicast, IPsec, IKE, firewall, NAT
UDP, TCP, SCTP, flow inspection, TCP termination.

QOSMOS ixEngine

Qosmos ixEngine is a Software Development Kit (SDK) composed of software libraries and tools that are easily integrated into new or existing solutions.
