Not only can it optimize the control/operation database for manufacturing management, but the integration between relative control systems can enhance the overall operation performance. To ensure the proper integration of all system components, a reliable communication gateway is necessary to help engineers easily link systems together. |
Two Different Needs, One Gateway:
Our partner, SunWare Taiwan, had received two different requests from their customers. The first one came from a Petrochemical plant that wanted to connect an OMRON PLC and YOKOGAWA DCS for automation system integration. Because both of the PLC and DCS only support the MODBUS Master mechanism, they cannot communicate with each other directly, so a communication gateway was required. |

The second request came from a Semiconductor plant. They needed a data aserver to retrieve operation data from Siemens, Allen-Bradley, MITSUBISHI, and OMRON PLCs. They needed a platform with the capability to convert various protocols. |

For the first request, SunWare used Advantechˇ¦s UNO-2059 installed with an OMRON PLC OPC server to read data from an OMRON PLC. There is another program being ported in the platform to translate the OMRON PLC data to be MODBUS/RTU format. And the MODBUS slave mechanism was established inside the UNO-2059 so that the YOKOGAWA DCS can retrieve the data of the OMRON PLC from UNO-2059.
For the second case, SunWare integrated the PLC OPC servers of Allen-Bradley, Siemens, OMRON, and MITSUBISH together through the UNO-2059. The PLCˇ¦s data can be read into the UNO-2059, and the data converter software can translate the data of the different PLCs database inside the UNO. This UNO becomes the PLCs data server for operation data management purpose.
